Brian Wood: How to Master Responsive Web Design

It is an exciting time to work in web design! The field is constantly evolving to include new platforms, devices, formats and markets. Responsive web design is just one of the skills that graphic designers have to master to stay relevant.

In this post, I will be sharing 3 of my favorite tips on responsive web design that you can use to get started the right way.

Tip #1: Check out analytics before you start designing the site.

This may sound weird, but I have clients come to me all the time chanting “mobile, mobile, mobile” when in fact, 95% of their audience is looking at their site from a desktop browser.

Checking out analytics, like those available through Google, lets you track where your users come from and what browsers and devices they are use. This information will help you determine if you want to design mobile or desktop first.

Tip #2: Design to a grid.

This one relates to Photoshop specifically, when it comes to responsive design. As we design for web, we typically design to a grid. This makes it easier for either you or a developer (whoever will create the actual site) to start with a template, framework, or simple grid and have the design match it. This makes it easier when figuring out the column sizes and the math is already done for us in the template.

In the latest version of Photoshop CC, you can start with a grid by opening a Photoshop file and choosing View > Guide Layout. In the New Guide Layout dialog box, you can set up a grid of guides (columns and/or rows), set margins, and more. This makes it easy to get started designing on a grid!

Tip #3: Keep learning.

If you are a web designer, front-end or back-end developer, or even a combination, you will need to keep learning. Why? The web technology is always moving forward (even if the browsers sometimes don’t seem to be).

There are so many resources out there now (check out my bookmarks and you’ll see). Here you can find some great ideas on how to keep up with the industry:

Take for instance, Scalable Vector Graphics (SVG)—this is something we use a lot of on the web, from simple logos to animation. If you don’t know what it is or how to create it, get on it (hint: you can now save SVG from Illustrator and Photoshop). For a primer, check out this site: http://css-tricks.com/using-svg/

I hope you found the info useful. Have a tip on responsive design that you would like to share? Please add it in the comments below.

Does your content interrupt your audience?

Blog image Final

This post introduces a series inspired by the Creative Cloud Masters Conference, an event organized to empower designers with training on the latest tools and techniques available in their field. Follow this blog to learn more and participate in social media conversations using the hashtag #CCMastersConf.

Yes, we said interrupt. Unlimited access to abundant, rich content, coupled with the multitude of avenues to distribute and access it, have accentuated our fear of missing out (FOMO) and reshaped our online conduct. We skim through articles in seconds, fast-forward through videos, research ways to speed-read, you name it!

If you are a marketer or graphic designer, you’re probably always thinking about new ways to make readers pause and focus their attention on YOUR content.

How do you accomplish such a goal when you have to balance your creative process against tight deadlines and heavy workloads? Most importantly, how do you keep up with a constantly shifting media landscape that blurs the boundaries between creative roles and pressures content creators to constantly reinvent themselves.

You’ve done your homework: you know your audience and what channels they use, you follow the latest trends, and you have content that ads value to your audience. You’ve checked all the boxes right? Yet, grabbing your audience’s attention may still prove difficult. This is why the execution of an idea is critical. How you bring concepts to life will have a major impact on how that content performs. Technical skills are key in this final step of the creative process. It can all come together or fall flat in the graphic designer’s hand, which brings us to the reason for this post.

We’ve trained graphic designers for many years now and have learned about the challenges you face on a daily basis. Whether you design for Government organizations, medical institutions, media groups, or the non-profit sector (to name just a few), the most common and pressing challenge is gaining the skills needed to stay relevant and ahead of the game. An Adobe study revealed earlier this year, that 91% of creatives say they need to be skilled in more than one area with 90% attributing digital tools and channels as the primary source for the changes.

That’s what led us to produce the Creative Cloud Masters Conference. Our goal is to connect designers with each other and with top experts in their field and empower them to innovate their work. Follow this blog and check out the website to see if this is the right event for you.

Founder of C47 Gives Us Tips on Lighting!

unnamed
Quick! You have a last minute interview to shoot and virtually no time to set up. How do you get your lighting just right? If you can’t answer that question, look no further than Jem Schofield.

For any producer, filmmaker, or anyone interested in shooting professional and aesthetically pleasing interviews, lighting is an essential if not an upmost factor in video production. Jem Schofield, a producer, director, educator and founder of theC47, an educational resource focused on teaching video production and filmmaking, asserts that there is “an infinite amount to learn about lighting,” according to an interview about his upcoming New York Post| Production Conference session “Quick Interview Lighting Set Ups.”

Schofield explains that as crews get smaller, the ease of the production process has not been following a similar trajectory. For this reason, Schofield was inspired to create a short session to cover the basics of scouting, setting up, and lighting an interview. Though he admits it is not as thorough as his longer workshops, he does project efficiency and results out of his session. Stressing the importance of basics such as those which he intends to touch upon in his session, Schofield recalls not recieving the same guidance when starting his eduction on lighting, making the process perhaps more challenging.

 jem_banner-cam-movmt1
Schofield offers tips such as watching documentary and narrative films with thesound turned off in order to fully observe and take notice of lighting elements and procedures. With major advances in lighting equipment and technology in the recent decades, Schofield claims that it is an exciting time for filmmakers. Learn how to make the most of an interview. Time: If You Could Save It, How Would You Spend It?

clock stock 3

Jim Croce said it best:  “If I could save time in a bottle…”  Imagine the possibilities.

We all feel the daily constraints on our time.  I was recently returning from a trip to Philadelphia when we encountered multiple weather delays.  We sat on the runway for an hour and a half waiting for our turn to take off; there were a good 20+ planes ahead of us on the tarmac.  I quickly began running through my schedule in my head: flight time + landing time + baggage claim + airport parking + return trip home… Time.  If only I could save it in a bottle.

What took me to Philly in the first place was a graphics trade show I attended.  While there, I met a gentleman 80 years young—Dave, a sign maker who was telling me of the old days when he would use his 24-foot drafting table and hand-paint signs.  He’d complete 4 per day, he shared.  Today, Dave still has his sign shop and was enjoying previewing the new equipment at the show.  “Those wide format printers can do so much more, print vividly not to mention faster.  They didn’t have those when I was young,” he said.  But imagine if they did, Dave.  What would you have done with the extra time?  Would you have worked the same amount of hours or would you have continued with the same volume and used the time elsewhere, perhaps spending more time with family or doing leisurely activities?

Dave and his craft are an art, no doubt about that.  Fortunately, today’s modern creative has more options, including tapping into technology to essentially “cheat” time:  short cuts to bypass manual processes; organizational workflows; streamlined software functionalities.   Are you taking full advantage of technology?  Today’s modern creative can “save time in a bottle” by knowing the tips of everyday tools and implementing the benefits:

Automation.  Let technology do the grunt work.  Print designers, did you know InDesign has a slick data merge function to flow spreadsheet data into design templates with a simple set-up? (View video tutorial now). With this tool, standard layouts can be completed quickly and easily vs. hours of tedious cut and paste work.

Efficient Workflows. Each tool you work with has built-in time-saving tricks.  You just have to know what they are, where to find them and how to use them to their fullest capability.  Investing time and training resources in this area is wise, not to mention critical to your time-saving success.

Focus.  Though the projects are piling up and your creative resources are limited, resist the urge to multi-task.  Studies show our brains cannot quickly jump back and forth between projects and the term “multi-tasking” is a misnomer. When you give your full attention to the project at hand, you’ll be more effective overall, accomplishing more, faster, and with better results.

How we spend our time is an individual choice.  But if you could save time in a bottle—if you could do your work in less time, what would you do with your extra time?

I’d love to hear your thoughts on this.  I encourage you to post a comment or email your response to denisem@fmctraining.com. The most thought-provoking response will be chosen to win a free pass to Creative Cloud Masters Conference, the conference that equips you to fully utilize your design tools to do more in less time and apply more creativity in the process.  Additionally, the winner will receive a complimentary pass to the co-located Graph Expo, to explore new printing equipment and technologies to bring your designs to life.

A New Era of Media Innovation

A New Era of Media Innovation

by Luisa Winters

innovation

Media Innovation:  I’ll define it as the new and creative means in which we communicate our message.  Marketing messages, educational articles, heart-warming stories– we now have many more options to reach our target audience, strike an emotional connection and engage with them: print, online, social media, video.  Technology advancements have sparked new creative ideas changing how we approach media; “integration” is our new buzz word– and the new expectation.  Marketers and designers alike are expected to know more, do more and achieve greater results, often with fewer resources.  Unfortunately, many creative artists don’t feel equipped to thrive in our new media landscape.

In research released earlier this year by Adobe, 2 out of 3 creatives expect their role to change in the next 12 months yet 1 out of 3 lack the training needed to advance in this new media era.  Creatives know they need to reinvent themselves…91% say they need to be skilled in more than one area with 90% attributing digital tools and channels as the primary source for the changes.  80% agree: we are in a creative revolution.  (Adobe Survey Data, April 2014; view entire report)

So what’s a creative to do?  How you adapt to the changes is up to you; you control the direction of your career.  As a seasoned creative, I’ve seen my share of media shifts over the years.  I’ve had to adapt my creative skills more than once to fit the market.  The creative artists who thrive embrace the changes, proactively prepare for new client requests, and as a result, their skills are in demand.

As for me, I’d like to help shape the future of media and be on the forefront of change.  New technologies also mean unlimited creative possibilities.  To me, that’s exciting.  The creative world is at our feet. We are indeed in a new era of media innovation.  Are you prepared?
